/peel/

Notes on the piece:

/peel/ is in many ways influenced by the second piece in Debussy’s first book of preludes,           (…Voiles). This is true from its title, which can be interpreted in several ways, to (perhaps ironically) its formal structure.  /peel/ essentially has two alternating thematic areas, one contrapuntally layered (think of a glass onion) and another, which is more homophonic in nature. The pitch collections in /peel/ are in no way borrowed from Debussy, but the approach to how the material is manipulated over time is very much drawn from how I view his approach in (…Voiles). Beyond this, the piece experiments with the rich palette of sound colors offered by the brass quintet, hopefully capitalizing on some special colors within the context of the whole.
